Back Country Cuisine Strawberry & Apple Sensation
Having never taken these dried fruits on a tramp before, I was more than intrigued to give them a try.
The tramp was and overnight in Canterbury, graded as moderate and our first day was going to be about 7.5 hours.
I decided to try these as my post lunch snack aiming for an energy boost to get me through the last of the day and the climb up to our camp for the night.
I was very impressed with the lightweight package, and it was relatively full which was pleasing to see.
There was more apple than strawberry, and as I’m a MASSIVE strawberry fan I savoured every single one.
The apple was cut into slices, and was nice and crispy. There wasn’t too much flavour in them in this packet, and it’s likely that they were new apples which would explain that, so another packet could be very different. The strawberries on the other hand were whole, super crunchy and bursting with flavour.
Overall, I would rate these a 4/5 and happily take them on any trip.
Jelly Belly Sport Beans
These were another new addition to my tramping kit, and a friend had recommended them as a great way to get a boost of energy when you need it. Kind of in the same way a barley sugar would.
They are a really handy pocket pack, and having them close was very convenient.
As our first day progressed and we were facing the last 2.5 hours which was going to be uphill and heading into the wind. I was starting to feel the energy draining.
Without having to drop my pack and find something to nibble on, all I had to do was reach into the hip pocket on my packs waist strap and grab out the packet of Sport Beans.
These beans were bursting full of juiciness, not overly sweet and because of the waxy coating were very pleasant to chew on.
The packeting had was a mixture of flavours, which made each bean (mostly) a pleasant experience. I say mostly because I’m really not a fan of grape or cherry, but having these certainly distracted me from the climb.
I’m really glad I had these, they got me up the hill. The following day, after having a terrible nights sleep and feeling very drained, they gave me the energy to get down the hill and back to the vehicle.
Overall I rate the Jelly Belly Sport Beans a 5/5. These will now take the place of the usual barley sugars I carry (added benefit here there is less packaging waste).
